PRESS RELEASE: Mutallab, Detroit Terrorist, Could Have Been Stopped!

The world is surprised that a Nigerian is at the center of an international terrorist attack, but the Citizens for Nigeria is not. We warned in August 2009 that the Nigerian government must move swiftly to fight religious terrorism in the northern part of the country, in the aftermath of the Boko Haram attack. Any effort by the Nigerian Federal Government after the failed bombing by Abdul Farouk Umar Abdulmutallab is too little and too late.

Almajiri -- Breeding of Future Terrorists

Nura Mohammed (10) gets up from the worn-out mat in the uncompleted building where he and his mates rest their heads at night. Goats may not find the small rooms where he and 15 others sleep conducive as there are no windows for cross-ventilation and the walls have given room to cracks looking as if it will fall the next minute. The occupants are, indeed, vulnerable to all forms of airborne diseases associated with the harsh Maiduguri weather. His face baked in the dust from the floor of the uncompleted building like someone coming out of sand dunes. He looks pale, apparently due to malnutrition, with blisters on his lips. The dryness of his face and rashes on his skin suggest the harmattan has taken its toll on him.

Mohammed performs ablution, says his morning prayers (Subhi) and joins his mates under the tree for the daily learning of the Qur`an. After the morning lessons, without taking his bath, he goes out like others with his bowl to beg for food. He repeats this ritual three times a day for as long as he is a student in this school. For him, life begins and ends at the school. For the likes of Mohammed, there is no room for dreams, ambition or career guidance. He lives life the way it comes -- on daily basis. This is a day in the life of Nura Mohammed, the face of the popular almajiri pupils, swarming the streets of northern Nigeria like locusts.

Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab's Journey Started Long Ago

Today, we heard of a Nigerian, Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab, who said he was an agent for al-Qaida and tried to blow up a Northwest Airlines plane as it was preparing to land in Detroit, Michigan, USA. Thank God, travelers who smelled smoke and heard what sounded like firecrackers rushed to subdue him. A disaster that has been long in coming was averted. This happened because a group of selfish Nigerian leaders with Islamic affiliation have, instead of taking the necessary action, quietly aided Islamic fundamentalism for almost 30 years. The Citizens for Nigeria can predict that when Abdul Farouk Abdulmutallab's identity is revealed, he will be known to come from the northern part of Nigeria that has always received state protection and patronage for religious persecution.

Rioting and Religion

The Boko Haram religious crisis calls to attention not only religious rioting, but also security of life. Religious riots, which have become part of life in northern Nigeria, had been supported by the political and monarchical elite to gain public acceptance. It should now be tackled with urgency. The dangerous Boko Haram, which claims affiliation with Al Qaida, threatens to spread its violence to other parts of Nigeria. For a nation where security of life is virtually non-existent, Boko Haram is a wake up call. This video produced by a foreign journalist highlights the problem of insecurity in Nigeria?

How Nigeria Has Failed...

Nigeria's propaganda official (aka Minister of Information and Communications), Mrs. Dora Akunyili, got more than she bargained when she sought the opinion of the Venezuelan Ambassador to Nigeria,  Enerique Fernando Arrundell, on development.

“So, it is important that Nigeria takes control of her resources. We have no illiterate people. We have over 17 new universities totally free. I graduated from the university without paying one cent, and take three meals every day, because we have the resources. We want the resources of the Nigerian people for the Nigerians. It is enough! It is enough, Minister!”

An embarrassed Mrs. Akunyili, was left speechless as the ambassador reeled before her how Nigeria, compared to Venezuela, has failed its citizens in the delivery of better standards of living.
