INEC Boss Must Be Probed

Media reports that the Indepedent Electoral Commission (INEC) Chairman, Professor Maurice Iwu lied about his academic credentials is troubling. An electoral commission is a sensitive institution expected to be led by people with the highest degree of integrity and honesty. This is the reason why allegations that Professor Iwu lied about part of his academic qualifications must be urgently unravelled. The elections cannot be supervised by someone who is generally perceived as a dishonest person.

A Gun in Your Face

Sample ImageA Nigerian soldier points a gun at a citizen in Ilesa, Osun State, in this picture taken by  The Nation newspaper. It is not clear if the citizen was eventually shot, but it clearly proves the sub-human conditions and violence surrounding the 2007 elections. Soldiers have been deployed to many states supposedly to ensure security, amid widespread allegations that the ruling party, PDP, had used the security agencies to rig the elections. There are protests in Kano, Osun, Edo, Ekiti, Ondo and a few other states, where the election was believed to have been manipulated with the connivance of the electoral commission.
