The Niger Delta is burning, and Nigeria is disintegrating with it. The pictures that the world see of Nigeria these days, through the kidnapping of foreigners in the Delta, compares to the images of Iraq. How did we get here? What should be done? The CNN travelled to the Niger Delta and showed the world a frightening report of a new Nigeria.
The religious violence resulting from the activities of the politically-connected Boko Haram organization is to be used by the ruling People's Democratic Party (PDP) to fight the opposition ANPP in the 2011 elections, intelligence reports have indicated. The Nigerian armed forces’ strike against Boko Haram likely is a calculated move by the PDP to lay the groundwork to defeat the ANPP and deliver all Nigerian states to the PDP in the 2011 elections. Boko Haram has always been a political as well as a religious organization with close ties to powerful politicians. The political elite in north-eastern Nigeria attempted to use Boko Haram for militancy as in the Niger Delta. The ANPP likely uses Boko Haram in its own violent campaign tactics in emulation of Niger Delta politics, which means a crackdown on it is a crackdown on the ANPP, the PDP's strongest challenger in the rigged 2007 elections.
